Between 1947 and 1969, the US Air Force meticulously recorded over 10,000 incidents involving Unidentified Flying Objects. Inside the Project Blue Book archive, which has recently been put online, witnesses described objects as "concave as a soup bowl", "onion-shaped" and resembling "a frosty silvery football" shooting across the sky. Here are four of the most extraordinary accounts: Kearney, Nebraska, 1957 A seed salesman was driving when he saw a flash of light. When he moved closer to the light, his car stopped working. The light came from a nearby riverbed where he saw an object, resembling a balloon. When he approached the space ship, another flash of light paralysed him. After the search, he was able to move again. He asked the men if he could take a closer look at the UFO. They agreed. Inside, he met four men and two women. They all spoke in German accents and seemed to move around on magnetic fields. The sides, bottom and floor of the ship were perfectly transparent. After around thirty minutes, they said goodbye. After leaving the UFO, it rose 150ft into the air and disappeared. At the same time as the sighting, a farmer’s truck broke down two miles away. During the investigation, a blue stain was found on trees near to the scene and green oil was found covering dry leaves. However the man was assessed by psychiatrists who said his “mental condition” would enjoy publicity. He was later committed to the state mental hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe Province, Argentina, 1963 An Argentinian truck driver was looking for a hotel to spend the night when he saw small red lights, four miles from Isla Verde. When he got closer to the lights, his engine cut out. Hoping he might find somewhere to stay, he left the car taking with him a blanket and a gun. He thought he saw the lights of a vehicle. However these lights disappeared and in their place he saw powerful rays of red light coming towards him. There was a smell of gas that made his eyes and face sting. Frightened, his knees gave way and he shot at the light with his revolver. In response “the light gave out a sound, like the rapid braking of a car and went backward a few meters”. He fled into a field looking for a shelter however from a hill two red lights appeared which “reflected” his steps. The red light continued to follow him as he walked around, confused. Then a blue lit “vineyard shaped vehicle” appeared. He said it had two small windows and inside he could see someone “but I didn’t see legs or faces, just a body type form”. Six hundred feet from the object he saw four human beings “or whatever they were”. He asked them questions but nobody replied. They just walked beside him. They were 6'5" tall with a sparkling uniform. One of them came very close with a triangular object in his hand. The truck driver was again afraid and so fired another shot and it was “as if a shadow had fallen backwards”. They returned to the vehicle and the large object passed him overhead. A blue light however did not leave the man until he reached the city. The investigation confirmed that the truck was at the place the man had said it was and his footprints were also found. However the US Air Force received only second hand evidence from the Argentinians and decided it was too expensive and too much time had passed to continue the investigation. Harrisonburg, Virginia Horace Burns was driving his station wagon when he saw a huge metallic object flying in the sky. It was crossing the highway about 200ft ahead of him when his engine cut dead. For approximately 90 seconds, the UFO landed lightly, “like a bubble”, in a small field. Burns said it resembled an “upside down toy top” and was about 90ft high. There was a blue glow around the base of the machine. The sighting was investigated by a professor at a college in Virginia who passed on his research to the US Air Force. He said he picked up “tremendously high reading of radiation” at the scene and a 14 year old boy said he had also seen a large UFO travelling in the same direction. The boy’s parents corroborated his story. The Project Blue Book report reads that there was a lack of evidence and placed the sighting in the psychological category. Vins-sur-Caramy, France A man was riding his bike on the highway when he saw what looked like a “very powerful flare” and four silhouettes that resembled human beings. Afraid of an ambush, he ran away and stumbled on a nearby house, where he met a couple and told them what he had seen. Together, the three watched the light as if blinked from white to dull red. Near to the light they saw three men, about 4'9" tall. They were immobile, dressed in greyish, beige outfits. The light faded and flew away. When they returned to the scene, with the police, they found the highway had been marked with forms, “black as the casting of costly tar”. The substance was soft and slightly stuck to the ground. Although the witnesses were described as “very trustworthy people” in the investigation, the report was classed as “unreliable”. A UFO has been spotted near the International Space Station in footage broadcast after astronauts evacuated part of the orbiting craft. Alien spotters noticed a strange object disappear behind the ISS, reigniting bizarre claims that the space station is actually a place for aliens to come out hang out with humans. Footage of the UFO was shown on the news channel CBS, sparking furious debate among online conspiracy nuts. It is not clear whether the film was stock footage, or taken from NASA's live feed. Veteran UFO watcher Toby Lundh told alien-hunting website Disclose.tv that he spotted a UFO just outside the space station as he was monitoring the live feed on his laptop, right before it was interrupted for 10 to 15 seconds. A star watcher claims to have solved the mystery of the Tyneside UFO. Since it was spotted over Tynemouth on Monday night, social media has been rife with people trying to explain what the object was. Alex O’Neil is originally from Newcastle but is now studying for a Masters in Astrophysics at Sheffield University. After viewing the UFO video on the Chronicle’s website, he got in touch. He said: “The brightest star in the night sky is called Sirius and it is often mistaken for a UFO because of how bright it is and how low in the sky it is. “It appears to be twinkling or pulsating because when light passes through the atmosphere, it becomes distorted. “Viewing Sirius through a telescope can be very confusing because it appears to move and change colour. Not one UFO but two glowing objects were spotted by UFO researchers this week in a NASA photo dating from 1966 — almost 50 years ago — showing the final mission of the Gemini space project. But were these UFOs actually alien spacecraft keeping a watchful eye of the progress of human history as mankind took its first baby steps into space? Or is this latest UFO “discovery” just a flaw in a NASA photo from five decades ago? The find comes courtesy of the prolific YouTube UFO enthusiast Streetcap1, who spotted two multicolored dots on a NASA photo taken by Gemini XII, the final mission in the four-year Gemini program — an early phase of the U.S. space program that saw a number of significant “firsts” in the history of human space flight and exploration. The Gemini missions featured the first human spacewalk, the first docking of two space ships, and what was then the highest altitude at which a manned spacecraft had ever orbited the Earth — 850 miles. The weird thing was it looked like a wingless plane flying sideways, a wide tube. Like a rolling pin. We all watched open-mouthed. “This wasn’t a lantern. It went from Ayrshire to Campsies (about 40 miles) in 60 secs. Passed right over us & we ran to other side of house. “Note: I’m not saying this was a UFO. I think a test plane only explanation. Mach 9 is now possible after all. But odd to see. “This was bigger than a jumbo jet. Vast as it passed our place and then shot off as orange flare again. “It also covered 40 miles in a minute, meaning a speed of approx Mach 3 or 4.” Despite Millar's sighting over Glasgow, it is a small town in the centre of Scotland which has earned its place as the UFO capital of the world. There are more than 300 sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects reported above Bonnybridge every year, with calls for an investigation into the paranormal town. Councillor Billy Buchanan says so many residents come to him with concerns about what is happening in the town’s skies that he has appealed to three prime ministers – David Cameron, Tony Blair and John Major – to order an urgent investigation. As yet no official investigation is underway. The Ministry of Defence say they are “satisfied that there is no evidence that the United Kingdom’s airspace might have been compromised by hostile or unauthorised foreign military activity.” But mysterious sightings in the area known as the Falkirk Triangle, which branches from Bonnybridge to Stirling and Fife, continue. Everything from space ships landing to mysterious balls of light have been reported. Some unexplained sightings have even been caught on film.DESPITE being such a small nation, Scotland has been home to a remarkable number of UFO sightings over the years. UFOs are by very definition impossible to define, we have no idea what they are. Just because something is called a 'UFO' does not make it an alien, it could be a drone, a break in the clouds or a duck with a flashlight on its head.

We'll be honest: we have no idea what it is. There's every possibility that it's an error on the camera, or a problem with the transmission.
If it isn't either of those, then the answers start to get a little stranger. Best guesses on a piece of paper by the end of the day.

The US government's Central Intelligence Agency has 'fessed up about reports of UFO sightings in the 1950s by playfully tweeting "it was us". It linked to a document entitled The CIA and the U-2 Program 1954-1974 (PDF), which was first published in 1998. The CIA decided to flag it up via its Twitter account because it had apparently proved to be a deeply popular read for conspiracy theorists hunting aliens in 2014.The 272-page document provided an interesting insight into what exactly went on in our skies during the '50s and '60s, when the CIA famously went dark (to use the spy lingo) when UFO sightings were reported. All of which spawned spurious tales of men in black (MiB) and extra-terrestrial beings. Since then, the CIA has claimed responsibility for more than half of all unexplained foreign objects spotted in the skies during those decades. Its secret U-2 spy plane flew at very high altitudes, which baffled ordinary folk on the ground, unaware at the time that such heights were possible for contemporary aircraft. The document explained how the secretive project started life in 1954: President Dwight D Eisenhower - determined to avoid another Pearl Harbor - authorised the construction of a new aircraft designed solely to fly over the Soviet Union and gather strategic intelligence. Peacetime reconnaissance flights over the territory of a potential enemy power thus became national policy. Moreover, to reduce the danger of conflict, the President entrusted this mission not to the armed forces, but to a civilian agency - namely the CIA. From that time forward, overhead reconnaissance has been one of the CIA's most important missions. Two question remains, of course: do you trust the US government's stats on its U-2 spyplane? And, anyway, if the CIA can only account for around half of all UFO sightings, then what the hell else was up there peering down on citizens of Planet Earth? ®
